A Long-Awaited Vision Comes to Life at Stonewall Hospital
If you’ve noticed some activity around Stonewall Hospital lately, it’s for a beautiful reason. A long-imagined vision is finally coming to life—a dedicated, accessible outdoor space for palliative care patients and their families, thanks to the generosity of local business man and longtime Stonewall resident Irv Koch.
The Palliative Care Garden Door Project, first envisioned in 2018 by staff at Stonewall Hospital, the Interlake-Eastern Health Foundation (IEHF), and South West District Palliative Care (SWDPC), was designed to give patients in palliative care access to nature, fresh air, and the comfort of being outside with loved ones. Central to the project is a large exterior door that allows hospital beds and wheelchairs to move freely from the existing palliative care suite to a private, enclosed patio space.
“Being able to offer a quiet, private outdoor space gives patients dignity and a sense of peace, especially during some of life’s most difficult moments,” said Carmen Baker, manager health services at Stonewall Hospital. “This project means so much to our staff, patients, and their families. We’re incredibly grateful to Irv for making this long-held dream become a reality.”
Spending time outdoors has proven benefits for both patients and families from reducing anxiety and stress to fostering moments of connection and comfort. The new space will allow patients to feel the sun on their skin, hear the birds, and simply be present with loved ones in a more natural, soothing setting.
Like many important community projects, this one faced setbacks. Initial fundraising was just beginning when the pandemic brought progress to a standstill. But now, the dream is becoming a reality thanks to Irv’s generous and significant donation. Construction has started and is expected to be completed this fall.
“I wanted to do something that would make a real difference close to home,” said Koch, “I’ve spent many years in this community, and it feels right to help create a space that brings comfort to others.”
The new space will be named the Sunshine and Peace Patio.
