Flowers in Bloom: Bringing Joy to Personal Care Home Residents Across the Region

This spring and summer, patios at Personal Care Homes across the Interlake-Eastern region were transformed into vibrant, welcoming spaces thanks to funding from the Interlake Eastern Health Foundation for the purchase of flowers and plants for every site.

Staff, residents, and volunteers came together to plant and care for the plants, turning the outdoor courtyards into colorful spaces for all to enjoy. The act of planting was just as meaningful as the beautiful results, sparking memories, creating conversation, and encouraging time spent outdoors.

“The residents sitting and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, observing their courtyard being beautified does so much for them emotionally and spiritually. Many have planted flowers in their own yards. It brings back pleasurable memories for them.”
Debra Bilawka, Recreation Coordinator

Gardening and time spent outdoors are proven to benefit health and well-being. For residents in long-term care, planting flowers offers a sense of purpose and joy. Simply sitting among greenery and blooms can reduce stress, spark memories, and promote connection.

“I wanted to express my gratitude for the Interlake Eastern Health Foundation! Our patio looks gorgeous now with all of the lovely flowers the residents planted!”
Emily Sigurdson, Recreation Coordinator

The flowers also reflect the creativity and individuality of each home. At Stonewall, where the Communities in Bloom theme was edible flowers, residents selected marigolds, pansies, and lavender. Dill and basil were planted for greenery, alongside tomato plants and peppermint—adding both beauty and flavor to the space.

“Thank you so much for the generous donation towards our flowers. The residents always enjoy telling us which flowers they want to choose each year, planting the flowers, and then enjoying them for the rest of the summer.”

The joy and pride sparked by something as simple as a planter of blooms show just how meaningful this work is.
